Maintaining a structure to work from home.

People were used to working from open plan offices, having lunch times at certain times with certain people and now that has all gone. We now had to work from home, with some people having to work whilst trying to keep their little ones entertained. We outline our top 4 tips on how to maintain that structure.

1. Work with set hours in place.

Set a schedule and stick to it...most of the time. Having clear guidelines for when to work and when to call it a day helps many remote workers maintain work-life balance. Trying to balance everything at once is bad for you as you start to feel like you are working constantly. Make sure to give yourself your break that you would if you were in an office environment.

2. Create a Morning Routine

Decide the night before how your morning structure is going to go. Are you going to go for a jog? What are you going to have for breakfast? Planning is key for your morning to go without hassle. Do not set a time to sit at your desk with a bowl of cornflakes in front of you on top of your diary. Not only could this spill on your work but also it does not put your mind in work-mode 100%.

3. Keep a dedicated workspace.

Okay, not everyone can have this in place but if you find it difficult to turn a room into a work room only then make sure that you have a space in a room that feels like a separate area. (please do not remove your kitchen cupboards to have extra space). It is important that if you must use your personal computer for work that you separate the personal stuff to work. For example, when your laptop is hooked up to the monitor and external keyboard, it is work time. When it is on your lap, that's personal time.

4. Connect with colleagues and make new connections.

Loneliness and isolation whilst at work is not good for your mental health and is not good for productiveness. Make sure to Face time your colleagues on issues that arise during the day instead of just calling them as it makes you feel you are in the office. It also makes you get dressed for working from home rather than staying in your PJ'S.

Above all else, figure out what works for you. Everybody is different and sometimes the answer is apparent, but other times you need some inspiration from someone else who may be in the same boat as you.
